THE POWER OF

SELF REFLECTION

KNOWING YOURSELF SERIES

An unexamined life is not worth living – Socrates

There’s a lot of depth in this quote, it means that a life that is not analyzed lacks meaning and purpose.

You analyze your life by doing self reflection, which is the act of looking back without prejudice and accepting who you are and what events have formed you.  It’s learning from and improving actions already taken.  In goal planning, self reflection helps you look back and replay actions and circumstances, in order to help you take note of the things you did right and the things you could have done better.

If you aren’t sure about self reflection or how it can help you get started on your goal planning journey we’re here to help. Below are some tips to get you started.

What do you gain from self reflection?

The benefits of self reflection are many.  It can help you highlight improvement areas, giving you the clarity needed to understand what went well and what went wrong. Self-reflection can also empower you to see un-realized potential by allowing you to go back and consider new opportunities or new ways of doing things you had not realized were possible. It empowers you to make informed decisions. Practicing self-reflection grants you the time to review yourself to take an internal inventory to make informed decisions rather than reactive decisions; this is better choice-making. You can feel empowered/refreshed. Looking back allows you to grow; even while it may feel uncomfortable, looking back on some experiences – especially the challenging ones- will enable you to acknowledge previous actions, learn, and move forward with an empowered and refreshed outlook. Finally, it can help you get out of a rut, get you on track and it can also help you maintain feelings of peace and happiness.

Practical ways YOU can practice self-reflection.

Here is what you can do:

Start with the why.

The practice of replaying your accomplished goals and how you were able to complete them, is so helpful as you embark on your goal-planning journey. Why? because that entire process helps you get to know yourself better. As you learn who you are and how the events that have transpired affected you, you can collect data, analyze it and dream up bigger, better goals. The only way you can get to know your deepest desires and the level of success you are looking for is to learn to recognize the patterns of success and failures from your past. So, in a way, you must look back in order to move forward and create personalized and detailed goals.

Next, GO deeper.

Ask yourself better questions. Skip the superficial, run-of-the-mill questions. It’s okay to journal, “How am I feeling today” or “What am I grateful for” but it’s better to be intentional and vulnerable and ask yourself the problematic/directed questions. That’s when the real growth happens. It’s time to edit the small self-talk and go straight to the root cause, discover patterns of failures so they are not repeated.

Take out time to think about what has transpired and answer better questions.

  1. What is your body telling you right now?
  2. What thoughts are overpowering your mind at the moment?
  3. Why am I feeling this emotional?
  4. What triggered it?
  5. What were your expectations? How were they not met?
  6. Did you make a mistake?
  7. What went wrong?
  8. Was your first observation correct or did they reveal that something else was going on?
  9. How can I make sure this does not happen again?
  10. What mistakes can I learn from?
  11. What were unrealistic expectations?
  12. How can I get better at adapting to the unexpected situations I faced?
  13. In a WEEK Look back: what things in this situation do you see differently now that a week has passed?
Generic questions are often too general to be helpful. They will only take you so far. You are looking for more in-depth questions to move you in the right direction, promote growth and ultimately help you create more self-awareness. I have made the Self-Reflection Interactive Guide to help you do just that. The guide prompts you to ask better, directed questions and establishes a habit of daily self-reflection. After all, you must make reflection a habit to get its full benefit. It takes work. It takes time. You will identify behavioral patterns as you reflect and write in your journal. These patterns take weeks and months to determine. Therefore, consistency is just as important as the act of remembering itself.

Why is self awareness so important to your goal setting process?

Simply put, self awareness is the key stone of emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is the ability to understand, use, manage your own emotions, as well as recognize and influence the emotions of those around you. It’s an important first step in goal setting because it’s literally the heart of the entire process. The way you view life, build relationships, form your habits, set personal goals, all depend on your emotional intelligence. It can also help you to connect with your feelings, turn intention into action, and make informed decisions about what matters most to you.
